Using Reverse Osmosis Systems For Fish tank Water Quality

RO (Reverse Osmosis) and Deionization necessary for the production of pure water for use in freshwater or saltwater aquariums.

Reverse Osmosis is a separation process that uses your household water pressure to force water (a solvent) through a membrane filter that retains the waste or solute on one side of the filtration process and allows pure water to pass through to the other side. Among other things, Reverse Osmosis is used for drinking water in homes and restaurants, but it is also one of the most important advances in our aquariums’ success, especially in Reef Ocean Systems!

Ever wonder why your friend's fish tank is cleaner than yours? Or how come you have to clean twice as much as him when you both use the same products and have the same kind of fish? It's probably because he is using some type of water filter but not just any kind - it's most likely a reverse osmosis (ro) system. A reverse osmosis system will remove a very good majority of impurities out of the water. Impurities like phosphates, nitrates, and heavy metals exist in most water sources even in bottled water.

Many tap water sources contains phosphates and nitrates which is the main food source for algae. When there is an abundance of these elements, algae will tend to grow very rapidly and stick to your glass making you spend your valuable time on cleaning the glass. Copper is another notorious element found in tap water which comes from the copper plumbing. Copper is can be very toxic to invertebrates and should be removed quickly to prevent any illnesses or unfortunate deaths within your aquarium. The best way to combat these impurities is by using a reverse osmosis system coupled with a mixed bed deionization (DI) filter. A reverse osmosis filter alone will remove about 95-98% of the impurities and the mixed bed DI filter will catch anything that is left behind. Together both will remove about 99.9% of impurities.
Another related problem to untreated water is the effects of pH conditioners. With untreated water, pH conditioners tend to be less effective due to the amount of impurities in the water. Reverse osmosis (ro) water coupled with mixed bed DI filtration will typically have nero zero TDS (total dissolved solids) in the water making it much easier for you to pH balance. With RO/DI water, you will be able to use less pH conditioners and minerals for pH balancing than with untreated water.
It requires very little maintenance and will help with saving time and costs. When the filters for the filtration system is serviced regularly, the costs in the long run outweigh any short term immediate bandage. Almost any standard reverse osmosis system on the market can be turned into an aquarium ready system simply by adding a mixed bed di filter. So join your friend and try using a reverse osmosis system with a DI filter. You will be surprised at the quality of water that you get.

Most important for your new freshwater fish tank is changing the water.

Why? Well, water changes involve more than just removing water from the tank and replacing it. You have to consider the condition of the water you are replacing it with, and the amount of water to remove. These can affect the water quality, and the state of your aquarium's health.
Colonies of beneficial bacteria grow on every surface in the tank. These bacteria are part of the biological filter; allowing them to thrive will help improve the quality of the biological filtration system.

- Coffee table aquarium
- WaterWonders Aquarium Kit

Every time you clean you fish tank, you should remove 10-15% of the water and replace it with fresh, dechlorinated tap water (bowl and small tanks need larger water changes more often). While you are doing this, you should use your siphon to vacuum some of the debris collected in the gravel. If you have an under water filter it is very important to clean the gravel when you do your water changes every week, or every other week, and this will remove waste particles, and oxygenate the substrate as well, allowing nutrients and oxygen to reach the biological bacteria living on the gravel. Usually, you can clean 25-33% of the gravel when you siphon 10-15% of the water.

Just some notes:
-Use a gravel cleaning siphon whenever you do a water change to remove all the trapped particulate from the gravel and also remove dissolved pollutants.

-Although I love to use the auto-filling siphons and so far I have not had any problems, be aware that adding untreated tap water into your tank can lead to disaster. You might prefer to precondition the water before adding it to your system.

-Always use water at room temperature, never use hot water to adjust temperature. Hot water contains a greater quantity of heavy metals like copper and lead. Heavy metals can be removed from tap water by the addition of "slimy" water conditioners. These products contain chemicals that will bind these metals, rendering them harmless. Carbon and certain resins will also remove heavy metals from the water.

-It's better to do smaller water changes more often than one large water change. Doing this will keep the water quality from changing too drastically.

-You can change the water during cycling. Normal water changes will not affect this process after 2-3 weeks.

-Always allow your tap water to run at least five minutes before using it. This will help decrease the dissolved heavy metal content.
Happy fishes!!

After the most recent demise of my last Betta- Hot Temper, who bless his heart, lived 2 years in a 1 gallon fish bowl, I found myself in a fish store (not so soon after, I did mourn the little guy). Wandering about I could not deny my instant love for a feisty beautiful little guy the size of a small drapery tassel, I brought him home (instant gratification and instant love is my middle name)...and proceeded to give him 'Hot Temper's' life all over again (yes...in a bowl), but this time I thought he might benefit from living at work with me (I work all the time)...fast forward to cute little fish, living on my desk, and between calls me looking up just what might make him happy (er)...I come to a sudden realization that I sucked as a fish mom(formerly) and needed to give the little guy what he truly deserved, more oxygen, more "toys", more room and heat. I bought this little aquarium wonder (w/a black top),bye bye bowl, and wow have I got one happy fish! This tank is an easy set up,the filter (that worried me sick) is great, it will not swallow or eat your Betta (as far as I can tell so far...thank goodness!),he is not struggling through any major currents and as far as I can tell, he is a happy camper (or show off). I purchased a small heater to keep his temp at what is most conducive to his normal habitat, my Betta is making bubbles nests, and showing off like a full finned champ. I always thought I had a happy Betta, until now, this fish is unbelievably active and showy. I know it's a fish, but he sure reminds me of a puppy with fins! I love this little tank, perfect on a desk top, easy to set up, perfect for a Betta (just buy a heater, plants, gravel and hiding nook and you're set!) Love this!!  ...ReadMore

Detail of biOrb Aquarium Kit with Light Fixture

The baby biOrb™ combines the looks of a traditional fish bowl with the performance of a 'hi-tech' aquarium. The 4-gallon fish bowl incorporates a clever and easy to change filtration system that has been designed to provide maximum benefits and fish keeper. biOrb's stylish, globe-shaped design will prove an eye-catching feature in any location. Together with its low maintenance and strong, safe construction will appeal to all age groups in both private and business sectors.

Have to disagree with the other reviewer here ... I purchased a Baby biOrb recently for my new Betta, after having my first betta living in an airless bowl for a couple years. I simply got tired of cleaning a stinky bowl every week. As a result, I went shoppin for a new tank with a bubbler and filter system and found the Baby biOrb.

While I agree that the maintence costs are significant at $132/ year (if you need to change a filter every 4 weeks), the costs balance with ease of maintenance. Personally, my experience with cleaning the Baby biOrb was a snap with the optional suction hose. Took me fifteen minutes to clean the tank, drain the grimey water and add new water. Couldn't have been much easier. And, I am not sure how anyone could have a problem swapping filter cartriges unless they have motor skills issues. ...ReadMore

Freshwater Aquarium Fish,Better Way for Beginners

A freshwater aquarium fish, just like any other, needs to be well taken care of. But in order for you to do it properly, you must first know some of the major points that you have to tackle while keeping your aquarium’s marine community intact.

If you have come to the conclusion that you would like to set up a tropical fish aquarium for the enjoyment of yourself and your family, then you are probably in need of some directions in how to get started. If you have never had an aquarium before, then it is recommended to start out with freshwater aquarium fish because they are easier to care for.

SeaClear System II Aquarium ComboSeaClear Mini-Kit

Freshwater aquarium fish, as opposed to their bright and flashy cousins of the saltwater variety, can be a good experience for people who have never cared for fish before. Saltwater aquarium tanks can be quite challenging to set up and properly maintain. For this reason, it is strongly recommended that those new to fish keeping, look first at starting with freshwater fish. After you have been able to master the challenges of keeping freshwater fish alive and their aquarium in good order, at that point you might want to broaden your fish keeping horizons and branch out into the saltwater aquarium realm.

Ultimately, it does not matter what kind of aquarium or tank that you choose for your freshwater aquarium fish, as far as care and maintenance is concerned. However, if you cannot keep to a regular, weekly schedule of cleaning and maintaining the tank, then perhaps you should not even bother setting up an aquarium.

In addition, you will also need to monitor your tropical fish tank on a daily basis. You need to be sure that the water is always properly in balance for your freshwater aquarium fish and that the correct and comfortable temperature is constantly maintained. The other daily task that you must remember to perform is to make sure that your fish receive the proper amount and type of food as needed.

After you have determined that you will be able to keep up with the regular required maintenance of freshwater aquarium fish, then you can start deciding on what kind of fish you want to include in your tropical aquarium. The tropical fish tank that you choose must be large enough so that it can properly accommodate the number and types of fish that you plan to purchase. The overcrowding of a tropical fish tank can be a deadly mistake because it can cause polluted tank water and can lead to diseased fish. Before making your final decision, make sure you ask how large the selected fish will be at maturity, as size can vary a great deal depending on the species. A newbie to fish keeping might want to start with a 10 to 20-gallon tropical fish tank and fill it with the smaller and heartier freshwater fish varieties.

In order to maintain a healthy environment for your freshwater aquarium fish, you will also need to have a quality water filtration system, a reliable heater and some nice aquarium decorations and accessories. When setting up your freshwater tropical aquarium, be sure to choose a location in the house where light and temperature can be controlled so that it remains constant. And, remember that once your tropical fish tank is set up and filled, it will be very heavy, so be sure that it is on solid footing with flooring that can handle the load.

Siamese Fighting Fish (Betta splendens) the popular species of freshwater aquarium fish.

The Siamese fighting fish (Betta splendens), also known as the betta (particularly in the US) and simply as the fighter, is a popular species of freshwater aquarium fish. The name of the genus is derived from ikan bettah, taken from a local dialect of Thailand. Betta is pronounced /ˈbɛtə/. The wild ancestors of this fish are native to the rice paddies of Thailand and Cambodia and are called pla-kad or trey krem ("Fighting Fish") in Thai.

Bettas or Siamese fighting fish are one of the most recognized, most colorful, and often most controversial fish in the freshwater hobby. Debates rage about the appropriateness of keeping them in small bowls. To fully understand their needs it is important to become familiar with their native habitat.

Bettas originate in the shallow waters in Thailand (formerly called Siam, hence their name), Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, and parts of China. They proliferate rice paddies, shallow ponds, and even slow moving streams. Although many fish keepers are aware that Bettas come from shallow waters, what is often overlooked is the water temperature.
The home countries of the Betta are tropical, which means the water temperature is quite warm, often into the 80's. Bettas thrive on heat, and will become increasingly listless when the water temperature falls below 75 degrees F. Water temperature is perhaps the biggest argument against keeping a betta in a tiny bowl (which cannot readily be heat controlled).

Even though Bettas do well in waters low in dissolved oxygen, that does not mean they require less oxygen than other fish. Bettas have a special respiratory organ that allows them to breath air directly from the surface. In fact they inherently must do so. In experiments where the labyrinth organ was removed, the fish died from suffocation even though the water was saturated with oxygen. For this reason, Bettas must have access to the water surface to breath air directly from the atmosphere.

Optimally the water for keeping healthy Bettas should be soft, warm, with a neutral to slightly acidic pH. Water movement should be kept to a minimum, which means that power filters and powerheads are not suitable. Bettas may be kept in a community tank as long as the water conditions are met, and if no aggressive or fin-nipping fish are present. However, only one male may be kept in each aquarium, unless they are separated by a barrier.

Siamese Fighting Fish thrive in shallow water, canals, and flooded rice fields with a temperature of up to 86 degree Fahrenheit, or 30 degree Celsius.  They eat fresh food such as daphnia, brine shrimp, microworms, bloodworms, and mosquito larva.  They can also eat frozen dry food.
Thai breeders of fighting fish are constantly developing new species, from the tiny wild betta to the cultured ones with long, flowing fins and brilliant colors, fetching better and better prices, from 10 baht to as high as 10,000 baht a piece.  Siamese Fighting Fish are immensely popular even in Singapore, adding to the pride of the Thai Breeders.

The use of plastic boxes that hang inside the aquarium are a suitable option for keeping more than one betta in a tank, or for keeping them in a tank with fish that might nip their fins. Females will generally not fight with each other, and may be kept in the same tank. NOTE: Selling a betta in a vase with a Peace Lily has become in vogue. However, a flower vase is not a suitable environment for the betta. For more information check the additional.

Seaclear Aquarium have Consensus on

It seems that the general general agreement on the Internet for Seaclear tanks is that they are among the finest quality tanks out there. They use exuberant quality acrylic.

The Seaclear tanks come in some unusual shapes and sizes. Their rectangular sizes are less deep than traditional but are taller, creating a larger viewing area and upright habitat space. They also make hexagon tanks, flat-back hexagon shapes, bow front tanks and cylindrical shapes. The sizes margin from 26 to 125 gal. The back panels come in optional blue or black.

SeaClear System II Aquarium ComboSeaClear Mini-Kit

Acrylic has many more benefits over glass. The Seaclear tanks are all made with acrylic. For one thing, the acrylic is stronger than glass and less prostate to breaks or leaks. Also, the seams are molecularly bonded which holds the integrity of the tank. Many tanks are virtually seamless or only seamed in the back.

Seaclear tanks come with a endurance guarantee against leaks. Acrylic is a better insulator to keep up more steay water temperature. Additionally, acrylic is lighter and easier to move. The main hindrance about acrylic is that it easily scratches. So Seaclear has a scratch removal kit available, which seems highly recommended by many fishbowl keepers.

Many of the Seaclear tanks are sold with a beginners kit that will have your tank unitedly and running in a short time. Some of the smaller tanks would be good mini reefs on a table top, desktop or counter. The ecstatic end models comprise built-in wet/dry filters and room for skimmers and heaters.

What types of food do goldfishes eat?

Goldfish have a unique digestive tract that requires specialized food to ensure proper digestion and optimum health. Because they sometimes experience digestive problems, it is better to offer several small feedings rather than a single large feeding. However, avoid overfeeding, as that can add to the digestive woes goldfish are prone to.

A gold fish diet requirements are mainly based on high protein and carbohydrate products full of essential nutrients for growth and development. You might think that a fish must be cold as it is being stuck in the water all the time but surprisingly they store carbohydrates for extra protection in cold weather, although ironic, this is true of all types of fish breeds.

GOLDFISH CRISPS

Some of the most common types of gold variety fish foods include flakes and pellets, larger g fish might find it easier to consume pellets while small varieties of fish would find it easier to consume flakes. When you first get your gold fish, base its diet on one or another and supplement once in a while with a combination of pellets or other treats. On that note gold fish can be fed frozen food which you can purchase from you local pet store such as worms and brine shrimp which is a favourite to these type of fish.

It is advised to change your fishes diet every once in a while to keep it healthy and give it the best opportunity for growth. Remember to check what food you are feeding them as many have made the mistake of feeding gold fish tropical fish food that provides no nutritional value and can harm your fish.

Pet Fish Stores and finding Fish supply

Are you looking to buy a pet fish but don’t know where to start? Here are some things you should face for in a pet fish supply.

Common pet fishes and more. A few goldfish do not brand a pet fish supply. The physical deal should offer you a whole array of aquatic animals that live not only in fish bowls and aquariums, but even in ponds. Look for pet fish stores that merchandise varieties such as Fancy Guppies, Koi, Betta Fish, Angelfish, Mollies, Oscars, African Cichlids, Puffer Fish, and even Eels, Piranhas, and Sharks. Some even portage frogs, shrimp, and crabs for ponds.

All kinds of fish food. You indigence your pet fish supply to be your one-stop shop for all fish needs, particularly cusine. Remember that different kinds of fishes have different dietary requirements. There are vegetarian, omnivore and carnivore types.

Mollies, for example, devour mill material in the manner of flakes, pellets or tablets. Do not buy massive quantities of fish food because they tend to lose nutritional capacity over time. Maintain Your Fish Tank Aquarium Water Chemistry

The qualityy of the water in your aquarium is vital to the health of your fish in the well-being of your fish tank and one way to make sure that this water is in tip top shape is to test it often. You need to be sure that the water is the right temperature, not too acidic or two alkaline and has the right amounts of ammonia, nitrite and nitrate.

To maintain your fish tank aquarium and enjoy your fish keeping and ensure that your fish and plants thrive it's a good idea to know something about water chemistry and how it applies to your hobby. You should have a good water test kit to help in keeping the tank in equilibrium which should include the following tests.

"SeaClear Bowfront Aquarium Combo Color : Black"

pH
Chlorine and chloramine
Hardness
Ammonia
Nitrite
Nitrate

Definitions

Ammonia - fish produce ammonia as a exhausted product. It is poisonous and a build up will injury the fish. During the cycling of a new fish tank bacteria are encouraged to grow that proselyte the ammonia, first to nitrites and then to much fewer hurtful nitrates. Ideally ammonia level should always be zero.

Chlorine and chloramine - Chlorine is used as a tap water disinfectant and needs to be extracted before adding tap water to the fish tank. Leaving a pail of water for 2 days will allot chlorine to evaporate. Chloramine is used in some areas as a water disinfectant and cannot be removed this way. You will need to buy a water treatment chemical specially made for fish tanks to remove chloramine.

Copper - Copper is harmful to fish and invertebrates and can be current in tap water where it can enter the water you have older pipes. It is also make known in many fish medications.

Nitrates - Nitrates are only injurious to the fish at high levels and are produced by the nitrifying bacteria from nitrites which are harmful at much berth levels. The only way to darken the nitrate levels to below the acceptable 20ppm in your fish tank is to do regular partial water changes.

Nitrites - are poisonous and are produced by bacteria from the ammonia excreted by fish. They are then changed to the lesser hurtful nitrates. The nitrite levels in a well cycled fish tank should be zero.

pH - is a measure of the acidity of the water. A neutral solution will have a pH of 7, an acid solution lesser than 7, a basic solution more than 7. Although different fish prefer different pH levels most fish will be fine over a wide pH range. Some fish prefer a pH as high as 8.5, some as low as 5.5. Unless you have fish with these extreme requirements there is usually no need to adjust the pH of the water.

Phosphate - this chemical can be grant in fish food, tap water or from decaying factory material. It is a fertiliser for plants and can cause an algae bloom if the levels are too high. Regular water changes should keep the phosphate at an acceptable level.

Salinity - the concentration of sodium chloride in the water is important if you have a salt water tank and can be measured using a hydrometer.

Hardness - dissolved minerals in the water lead to the hardness. The main minerals present in tap water that cause hardness are magnesium and calcium and these will be now to a greater scope if you live in a strenuously water area. It is not really an issue for freshwater tanks unless you live in an area where the water is very soft. For saltwater tanks it is more important as some invertebrates and live corals indigence these minerals to grow.

Aquarium Water Conditioners - How To Create Right Atmosphere For Your Fish

AQUARIUM WATER CONDITIONERS; their ingredients (where available), what chemical functions they perform and uses based on my opinions of each based on using these products in a professional capacity (27 years of aquarium maintenance and research)

Stress Coat contains a special non-toxic polymer that is attracted to the skin of the fish forming a synthetic slime coat envelope. Stress Coat also contains sodium thiosulfate electrolytes such as sodium and sulfides which helps reduce loss of electrolytes through the skin, gills, and damaged tissue. The Aloe Vera in STRESS COAT reduces inflammation of damaged fish tissue.

"Tetra 8-4/9-Ounce AquaSafe Water Conditioner with BioExtract"

1. Water conditions differ in each area
Most aquariums the present are quite self sufficient and do not need much caring, but the water is something that has to be checked and the conditions checked and made chest for fish to be put into. Water is odd in each sequester part of the world and in some places it is contaminated and has to be made suitable for fish to survive in. The plants play an considerable role in this too. Some fish like tetras like soft water and so when testing the water for such fish you should schedule sure that the water is soft.

On the other hand Cichlid is a fish that prefers hard water. These species are from Africa where there is a lot of salt from natural sources in the water. Do not add limestone as gravel in the fish tanks.

After you try the pH readings of the water you will have an idea of the condition of the water. The proper shape that the pH should be is 7.If the estimate is lower then the water is biting and if it is higher than the water is alkaline. So if you maintain your water at the proper temperature and balance then you will have plants and fish that are healthy and that will live much longer. Some fish like the red nosed tetra like a fate of area to swim in and also a a great amount of plants around them. So constitute sure that the fish that you have in the aquarium all require the sort of conditions to survive in and not odd. This will create a puzzle to maintain them properly.

2. Testing the water
To test the water you will indigence a trial kit which you can procure at the local pet shop or online. Getting one at the pet store is more wise as the soul at the store can give you some recommendation on how to use it and tell you what the readings mean, exceptionally if you are new to using these kits. What are very useful are water conditioners which you can put in all time you convert the water in the tank.

3. Temperature of the water in the tank
The water heater should be kept at a low volume as the water should not get over heated.
It is for this reason that the fish tank should not be kept in the living room as living rooms are pretty passionate compared to the relaxation of the house. If you have a divide of plants in the tank and a tropical variety of fish then there should not be much of a problem, as these fish prefer warmer temperatures. The same tradition tropical plants also are more acclimatized to passionate temperatures. So maintaining the proper temperature will give your plants and fish a longer lease of life and a healthier one too. A heater that has a heaterstats is a good buy as it unconsciously regulates the heat and controls it by thermostat. This heater can be fixed to the glass with suction cups and each time it comes on a little lamp that it has comes on.

Build aquarium With Rock Salt - Magic Solution

The use of 1 teaspoon of regular rock salt per gallon of aquarium water will do wonders for your fish. It's a sort of magic elixer for passive fish, it will cure or forestall most fish ailments, and I accept it helps the fish grow faster, and "live long and prosper". If your fish is really sick then I suggest adding distinct teaspoon of salt to provide it 2 teaspoons per gallon. Salt works its magic in 3 ways, 1. parasites and other undesirables in the aquarium are adversely influenced by salt, so it is a treatment and safeguard for parasites. 2. Wounds heal faster with salt in the water (ever consideration how sores heal faster after you swin in the ocean?) and 3. Fish being in water all day have a stressful tempo trying to keep the right total of pure in their body, salt helps the fish in this battle (liken this to the wrinkles you get after a long bath)

http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/4274/saltwaterfishtank014929.jpg

Suppose you have an 10 gallon aquarium and you put 5 gallons of fresh-water into it, now if you add 5 gallons of nautical (ocean) water you wouldn't have 5 gallons of salt water and 5 gallons of fresh-water. You would have 10 gallons of brackish water. What happens is that the spry and saltly water mixes. Alright, conjecture you had swell of fresh-water that was semi-porus, and you put it into an aquarium full of saltwater. If you left the catch in there quickly and took the unattractive woman out and tasted the water you would come across that it turned into salty water, how salty would depend on how porus the catch was. But the point is that a fishes epithilium is a porus lamina. So if a fish is swimming colse to in a completly saltless aquarium, and the fishes somewhat salty blood and body fluids are contained in a porus skin (fish skin) then the fish has to fight to preserve the fitting chemical science within it's own body. Naturally increasing the salt content of the water toward the same level that is within the fishes body will relieve some of the force complicated in this process, and bring about life easier for the fish. This same first holds true in reverse for saltwater fish. So the completion is that a teaspoon of salt per gallon will help a freshwater fish, and a less than normal salt concentration will help a saltwater fish.

When using rock salt you don't have to worry about it being "iodized" or not, theres not adequacy iodine to really provide any difference, and iodine is a trace element found in most customary water anyway.

There are no freshwater fish that are harmed in any way by the addition of 1 teaspoon of salt per gallon. I have never skillful any obstacle with plants and low salt concentrations, I would quess that 90% of all aquarium plants are not faked by 1 teaspoon of salt per gallon, nor are snails, shrimp, African frogs, Daphnia , nor any and all fish including Catfish, not even Corydoras.

How much (how little) is 1 level teaspoon per gallon?

1 teaspoon = .13% of a gallon
2 teaspoons = .26% of a gallon
3 teaspoons = .39% of a gallon - also = 1 tablespoon
4 teaspoons = .52% of a gallon
8 teaspoons = 1.04% of a gallon
So it takes 24 teaspoons of salt per gallon to do a 3% medicinal saltwater dip solution.
Or to cook it easier to understand, it takes approximately 770 teaspoons to equal a gallon

The usual arguments against salt are that "My fish do penalize without any salt in the water" , to which I would say, good! but they will do better with salt in the water. I do forfeit without seatbelts too, unless I need them.

The use of salt and/or a copper based fish medicine such as "Had-A-Snail" or "Aquaisol" will cure or prevent just about all treatable fish diseases.

Note: The use of salt for disease stoppage and cure is a greatly debated subject on our note board. I personally believe in it's magic, but most people disagree.

Hand Feeding Koi Fish,How Not To Build Koi Fish Ponds

Koi fish are beautiful to behold, they are brightly colored and swim through the water with such grace and confidence. They are also quite entertaining. Unlike that little goldfish in your aquarium, Koi are very social animals. They love to be in large groups and will really put on a show at your next party.

One of the best things about Koi is their ability to eat out of your hand. In fact, that is one of the first things that draw many Koi owners into the hobby in the first place. They see another pond owner hand feeding their fish, and think that it is a really neat thing. With a little bit of practice, you can have a great time interacting with your Koi fish and have them hand feeding in no time.

Remember, first of all, that once Koi fish ponds are built, they are permanent structures so careful thought and planning beforehand are crucial to the success of constructing Koi ponds. Do not, for example, choose a location where the entire Koi fish pond will be exposed to direct sunlight all the time. Koi fish ponds need to be shady but not completely in the dark so don’t build them next to large trees either.

Keep in mind that Koi fish are capable of growing to enormous sizes. A mature Koi has a length of about 36 inches but some have been known to grow even bigger than this. Whatever you do, avoid building a small pond or you will live to regret it! The size of your Koi fish pond needs to take into account the length these fish will grow as well as the number of Koi you intend to keep.

In addition, do not build a shallow Koi pond and think that this will be adequate. Shallow waters make Koi easy prey to predators like the blue heron but also it can cause large sudden changes in water temperature. The latter is harmful to Koi as it will cause the fish undue stress which will reduce their immune system and in turn make them vulnerable to viruses and infections. Therefore, for the purpose of Koi protection from predators as well as to keep pond water temperature stable, the recommended depth of a Koi fish pond is a minimum of 4 feet.

Speaking of predators, help to protect your beloved Koi by also making sure that the sides of the pond are built vertically steep and smooth. Avoid opting for ledges around the sides of the pond as raccoons have been known to use ledges to help them wade into the water and steal dinner for themselves.

Do not build a Koi fish pond without also building a quarantine tank where you can monitor new Koi fish for signs of illness prior to introducing them to the actual pond. A separate tank can also act as a hospital area for treating Koi when they are sick or injured.

Keep the shape of Koi fish ponds simple – either round, square or rectangle. These shapes are easiest to clean via a filter. Do not think about building a Koi pond without installing a (preferably large) filtration system. Koi produces a lot of metabolic waste on a day-to-day basis which must be removed efficiently to keep the pond water as clean and clear as possible. This is vital to maintaining the health of these fish.

Koi fish ponds will also need a pump to move the water through the filters, an ultraviolet steriliser to stop algae from turning the water green, a pond water aerator and a pond heater. Without the latter, you may well end up losing a few Koi fish at the end of every cold winter.

Once you get your new freshwater aquarium it is time to set it up. While most people don't have the patience the best thing to do is to load your tank with water, set up you decorative gravel, rocks, plants and anything that catches your eye and let it sit for a few weeks. Be assured to have all your filtration and air store running during this time. The motive it is significant to do this is to let any chlorine dissipate out of the water and get the beneficial bacteria a chance to develop.

If you put fish in a tank that has had time to get established you will end up with new tank syndrome, which can be utterly injurious to any fish and cause them to die. This bacteria is the primary fish waste disposal resource. Without it toxic levels of ammonia and other waste gases will build up rapidly in the water. Giving the bacteria a opportunity to cycle will create a fish friendly environment that will protect your purchases.

A freshwater fish tank does take some work, both setting up and maintaining. But the rewards of its expression in your home are more than worth it.
